The Dolly Partons

In Skramgnirah, where life is without form, many entities co-opt the appearances and characteristics of beings from the physical worlds. Telepathically projecting themselves as material second selves, they form sects, associating with others who have the same avatar. The Dolly Partons are one of many such sects. The Dolly's project themselves with warmth, humor, optimism, and wisdom, and most importantly, they are the caregivers for the afflicted. Altrusim and sacrifice are Dolly hallmarks.

The Skramgnirahn practice of co-option by sects offers purpose, identity, recreation, pleasure, and power, but it is also addictive and self destructive. Sect members are initially bestowed with great strengths attained through psychic sharing. Althoguh a newcomer's powers increase rapidly at first, thsi increase becomes progressively slower as additional members join the collective. Inevitably a zenith is reached, and the power flow reverses direction. When this happens, the co-opter, now considered to be an elder, begins the path towards dissapation and is ultimately consumed by the collective.

For most sects, dissipation is the fatal consequence of co-option, but for the Dolly Partons, it is the ultimate, glorious sacrifice.
