The end of the Civil War marked the end of slavery, but those who had been slaves continued to face discrimination and oppression. Inequality persisted. Injustice prevailed.

143 years later in 2008, the people of the United States elected their first African American president. It was a joyous, wonderfull, important, and historic milestone.

This painting incorporates Matthew Brady photographs of Abraham Lincoln, a newspaper account of the time about his speech, and a map from the 1860's.
