Walking along the river front, they watched as the train crossed the bridge in the distance. Gulls flew above them and the sun’s rays came through the clouds.

Tomorrow was their anniversary. The family was coming in from across the country. She had hoped her brother would be able to come over from Munich, but his daughter said he wasn’t up to it. The dementia was too far along.

She often thought of those years ago when they had had to leave.
