The sisters knew it had been a mistake. Betrayal had become common and they weren’t sure that he had been found out. Maybe he had left without saying anything.

The stench lingered on afterwards. Happiness had become a thing of the past, and it was hard to imagine why the children laughed.

Finally, when the oldest died, the others took her things and tossed them into the street as a public demonstration.
