From Hangzhou to Shanghai

These small sketches were done during a visit to China. They were executed while riding in a bus, first between Hangzhou and Suzhou (July 8, 2005), and then between Suzhou and Shanghai (July 9, 2005). For the most part, the drawings were attempts to represent the fast passing scenery (e.g., bamboo forests, mountains, the road ahead, buildings, bridges, cars, and signs, but I was unable to draw with any control due to the extremely bumpy ride. The attempt in vain to draw as the bus hit bump after bump was interesting. These products of chance and improvisation demonstrate a poetic juncture between an artist's control and the inevitability of nature.
